If you’re like me, you probably don’t like standardized tests. I don’t teach to them…at all. We develop test taking strategies and we, of course, dig into comprehension. But, as always, we have to spend some time reviewing.
But what do we review? We have IXL and other tools and resources for prefixes, suffixes, author’s purpose, etc. We never stop delving into inference, critical thinking, comprehension, etc. So what I do is spend some time on standardized test vocabulary. If a student doesn’t understand what a question is asking, they have little chance of success. I think we, as teachers, often forget about this basic need.
Illustrate. So many of my students think this means a drawing, which it does, but not in this context.
These are just a few of the 16 commonly used standardized test vocabulary review. It’s a way to get kids familiar with these words, which will increase their understanding. Hopefully, this will lead to greater success on those dastardly tests.
